A black slat fireplace wall in Yorkville, a navy board-and-batten wall in Chicago, and a decorative slate fireplace renovation—three recent projects completed by our local partners show different ways to give an existing room more character.
Each project focuses on a specific feature, using color, texture, and proportion to make it feel connected to the home.
Yorkville: Black Slats, a Wood Mantel & an Electric Fireplace
This Yorkville living room originally had a television on a freestanding cabinet against a plain wall. The completed project brings the TV and a linear electric fireplace together within a framed, floor-to-ceiling feature.
Black vertical slats create contrast against the light surrounding walls. A natural wood mantel adds warmth and separates the screen from the fireplace, while matching black trim gives the installation a defined outline.
The design leaves the walls on either side open, keeping attention on the central feature without adding shelves or cabinetry.

Chicago: A Navy Board-and-Batten Accent Wall
A wide living room wall became a focal point with a rectangular board-and-batten grid and a deep navy finish.
The layout was planned around existing vents, outlets, and switches. Large panels establish a consistent pattern across the wall, while narrower sections at the edges complete the composition. Painting the trim and wall the same shade lets light and shadow reveal the detailing.
The navy finish contrasts with the white baseboard and warm wood flooring, giving the room a more finished appearance while preserving its existing layout.
Our custom accent wall designs include board and batten, decorative trim, wood slats, and other finishes suited to different rooms and budgets.
Chicago: A Fireplace Updated with Decorative Slate Tile
For this project, our partners refreshed an existing fireplace surround while retaining the original firebox and hearth.
Decorative slate tile extends upward in a tall, narrow composition that complements the room’s high ceiling. Gray and metallic tones, varied rectangular shapes, and reflective surfaces give the surround depth as daylight moves across it.
The television remains beside the fireplace, allowing the renovation to focus on the fireplace itself. Carefully fitted tile around the opening and hearth connects the new finish to the existing elements.
This project shows how a focused fireplace wall renovation can change the character of a room without replacing everything around it.
